MALIKology

MALIKology is the Fraternity’s interpretation of the "science of manhood." It is a synthesis of science, history, philosophy, and African Diasporas’ cultural values and practices about the nature, purpose, direction, function and responsibility of manhood.

Primarily, MALIK is defined as King or Ruler in Arabic & Swahili. MALIK is also an acronym of principles which we uphold dually as an organization and as individual members. These principles are Manhood, Achievement, Leadership, Integrity, and Knowledge; and as MALIKS, we are Men Achieving Leadership with the vital ingredients of Integrity & Knowledge.

Although the original name of the organization has transcended from MALIK Sigma Psi fraternity Inc., to MALIK Fraternity Inc; the meaning behind these symbols still remain sound in our values. Sigma and Psi, recognized as the 18th and 23rd letters of the Greek alphabet are representative of progress and man. The origins of these letters are said to have derived from the Coptic and Phoenician alphabet. The Sigma originates from a symbol used to represent the Nile River, which flows from south to north; hence it’s meaning of progress. The Psi originates from the early representation of man (with his hands in the air) in his worshiping state of humility to the sun god; as they believed that the sun was the source of all life. Other Arabic and Ancient Eastern Civilization influence is reflected in our organizations name. We read our name from right to left, thus revealing the term Man Progressing to be King. We do not insinuate that our members are rulers over any group of people; but through all the principles of MALIK, a man is ruler of his destiny.

MALIK is also the religious name of our organizations shinning prince; El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Our organization maintains that men are to grow through conscious recognition and transformation of self just as our shinning prince has: Malcolm Little, Detroit Red, Malcolm X, and El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. The different names he was known by are representative of the mindset and transformations he progressed though within his lifetime. These allowed him to transcend over time into the powerful leader that he was known to be. As MALIKs we understand the unequivocal importance of Manhood, Achievement, Leadership, Integrity, and Knowledge as they relate to self development, and service to humanity.
